Turns Out Outside Is the Supplement We Were All Missing
What I figured out when I stopped trying to optimize our health and just went outside more

A few years ago I went through a phase where I was really into supplements.
Magnesium for sleep. Zinc for immunity. Vitamin D because someone told me I was probably low. I had a little pill organizer and everything. I felt very on top of things.
And then I read something that kind of stopped me in my tracks: the most effective way for your body to get vitamin D isn't from a capsule. It's from being outside. Skin in sunlight. The old-fashioned way. And not just for a few minutes, consistently, regularly, as a habit.
I looked at my pill organizer. I looked at my kids, who had been inside watching TV for an hour. And I thought, we are doing this backwards.
What Vitamin D Is Actually Doing Behind the Scenes
Here's the thing about vitamin D that I didn't fully appreciate until I looked into it: it's not really a vitamin in the traditional sense. It functions more like a hormone, and it has a hand in a surprising number of things your body does every day.
Bone strength, immune response, mood regulation, muscle function , vitamin D is involved in all of it. For kids especially, consistent vitamin D levels support the kind of steady physical and emotional development that you don't really notice when it's going well, but you do notice when it isn't.
The tricky part is that food only gets you so far. Fatty fish, eggs, fortified milk, they help, but the most efficient source by a significant margin is sun exposure. Your skin produces vitamin D when it's exposed to UVB rays, and it does it fast. Twenty minutes of morning sun on your arms and legs goes a long way.
This is good news for us specifically. We live in South Florida. The sun is not a scarce resource around here.
But It's Not Just the Vitamin D
Here's where it gets interesting. Because the benefits of getting outside regularly go well beyond what's happening with your vitamin D levels.
Research on kids and outdoor time keeps pointing to the same things: better focus, lower stress, improved mood, more creative play. Time outside in natural light does something to the nervous system that time indoors just doesn't replicate, and it doesn't seem to matter much whether it's a structured activity or just wandering around in the backyard.
For adults, it's the same story. Time in green spaces and natural light has been linked to lower cortisol levels, better sleep, and a general sense of being more okay with everything. Which, as a mom running at full speed most of the time, sounds pretty good.
The supplement I actually needed wasn't in a pill. It was just the thing I kept putting off until the weekend.
The Sun Protection Middle Ground
Now, I know what you're thinking, because I thought it too: okay, but we can't just let our kids bake in the Florida sun to get their vitamin D. And that's fair.
Here's the balance I landed on, and it's genuinely simpler than I expected.
Morning outdoor time, before 10 a.m., is when UV levels are lower and vitamin D synthesis still happens easily. A walk, backyard play, time at the park — this is the sweet spot. You're getting the benefits without the intensity of midday sun.
For the rest of the day, UPF clothing covers the large surface areas — torso and arms, with built-in sun protection that doesn't require reapplication, doesn't wear off when they're sweaty, and doesn't involve chasing anyone around with a spray bottle. That frees up sunscreen for faces and exposed legs, which is a much more manageable situation.
The ONE Shirt is what I reach for every time we head out. UPF 50+ bamboo that's soft enough my kids don't fight me on it, breathable enough for South Florida mornings, and it dries fast when things get sweaty (and they always get sweaty). There's a kids' version too, which is how we handle most of our outdoor time without overthinking the sun situation.
Smart protection and regular outdoor time aren't in conflict. They work together.
The Simplest Shift
You don't need a new routine or a complicated plan. Just a small, consistent nudge toward outside.
Morning is the easiest entry point. Before the day gets full and hot and everyone has an opinion about where they want to go. Ten minutes in the backyard before school. A quick walk around the block. Sitting on the porch while the kids ride bikes. The bar is genuinely low, and the return is real.
We stopped optimizing and started just going. The pill organizer is still in the cabinet somewhere. We don't really use it anymore.
