Fishing with Kids: What to Wear for Comfort, Warmth, and Safety
The first time we took our kids fishing, I packed snacks, poles, and way too many toys. What I forgot was the most important thing: clothes that could handle the weather and water.
One ended up sunburned, the other wet and freezing. I spent more time managing meltdowns than actually fishing.
Now I know that fishing with kids is about more than bait and hooks. It’s about keeping them comfortable so they can focus on the fun. Here’s what we’ve learned to wear and pack.
Sun Safety First
Fishing usually means long hours under direct sun, often with water reflecting UV rays back at you. Sunscreen alone isn’t enough.
Our go-to? The ONE bamboo sun shirt. It’s:
- UPF 30+ rated for protection without chemicals
- Lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking
- Long-sleeved with thumb holes to protect hands
- Soft and comfortable for sensitive skin
We wear it for both kids and adults. It’s the layer that works from dawn to dusk, on or off the water.
Hats, Sunglasses, and Footwear
- Wide-brimmed hat: Protects face, ears, and neck
- Kids’ sunglasses with UV protection (brands like Babiators work great)
- Closed-toe sandals or water shoes: Prevent slips on docks, rocks, or boat decks
These simple items prevent the small accidents and complaints that can cut a fishing trip short.
Layering for Comfort
Fishing often starts early, when it’s cool, and ends hot. Layers are your best friend:
- Base layer: ONE bamboo shirt for temperature regulation
- Light fleece or hoodie for cool mornings
- Wind Breaker/ rain jacket if it's windy or possible rain
- Quick-dry shorts or pants for comfort in case of splashes
This way, you’re not lugging a suitcase of clothes—you’re just adding or removing simple layers.
Safety Essentials
- Life jackets (U.S. Coast Guard approved, properly fitted)
- Bright clothing so kids are easy to spot near water
- Bug protection: Consider long pants and sleeves, plus natural repellents
The U.S. Coast Guard’s safety tips for kids are a great resource for first-time family anglers.
What We Pack in Our Fishing Bag
- ONE bamboo sun shirt for each child
- Hats and sunglasses
- Small fleece layer or wind breaker
- Snacks and water (hydration matters even on water)
- Life jackets
- Tackle and bait (of course)
When kids are comfortable, they’ll stay longer, learn more, and maybe even outfish you.
