A different way to think about outdoor motherhood

There is a version of the outdoor mom narrative that I am tired of.

The one where the whole story is about what she gives up: sleep, convenience, the dry hair. The muddy car and the early alarm and the vacation that was really just a more scenic version of parenting.

That version is not wrong, exactly. All of those things happen. But it is only half the story, and it is the less interesting half.

Here is the other half.

What We Actually Get

We get mornings that belong to us before the day fills up with other people's needs.

We get the specific kind of tired that comes from physical effort in fresh air — the kind that makes sleep feel earned and rest feel genuine, instead of the wired exhaustion that comes from too many screens and not enough actual movement.

We get kids who have watched us prioritize ourselves enough times that they start to understand that women have needs and preferences and physical lives that exist independently of their domestic roles. That is not a small thing to model.

We get competence. The quiet, accumulating kind. The knowledge that you can navigate a trail, read a weather change, pack light, handle the unexpected, and be physically present for whatever the outdoor day asks of you. Competence is deeply underrated as a source of confidence.

We get access to something ancient and non-negotiable. The outside does not care about your productivity or your to-do list or what you look like. It is just there. Big and indifferent and, paradoxically, exactly what most of us need.

The Rebellion Part

There is something quietly rebellious about being an outdoor woman, and I think we should name it.

Women have historically been associated with the domestic interior. The home. The inside. Stepping outside — literally, not metaphorically — and claiming physical space in the world has always been, at some level, a statement. That this body belongs here. That this person takes up space in the actual world.

I do not carry this consciously every time I go for a trail run at 6 a.m. But I am not going to pretend it is not there. The outside was not always considered ours. It still is not, entirely. Going anyway is still, on some small level, an act of insisting.

The Community Part

One of the unexpected things about building an outdoor life is who you find in it.

Not the intimidating version of outdoor culture — the ultramarathon runners and technical gear obsessives and people who discuss elevation gain at dinner parties. The other version. The women who show up at the trailhead with their kids and their imperfect everything and a sincere intention to be outside.

That community is real and it is good and it is one of the things you gain when you go outside consistently. You find your people. The ones who understand why this matters enough to show up for it.

What This Brand Is Actually About
